Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers Assembly Locks Out Governor Fubara Amid Supreme Court Judgment Implementation

Assembly

Tensions escalated today in Rivers State as the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly shut its gates against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This unprecedented action comes just a day after the governor publicly notified the Assembly of his intention to present the 2025 state budget, in compliance with the recent Supreme Court judgment on the state’s political disputes.

Governor Fubara, in a letter dated March 11, 2025, had reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the court’s ruling, stating that he was ready to move forward after being served the certified true copy of the judgment. As part of this commitment, he scheduled a consultative meeting with the lawmakers for March 10, 2025, to discuss key governance issues, including budget presentation and legislative accommodation. However, the meeting never occurred, as the lawmakers reportedly declined the invitation.

Rivers Lawmakers Reject Governor’s Invitation, Peace Talks Collapse

In a surprising turn of events, a video circulating online on Wednesday morning showed the governor and his team being locked out of the Assembly complex as they attempted to access the premises. This bold move by the Assembly members further deepens the rift between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State.

With the latest developments, the fate of the budget presentation remains uncertain, as citizens believe that the standoff between the governor and the Assembly could further destabilize governance in the state.

Despite this setback, Governor Fubara remains resolute in his efforts to implement the court’s ruling. In a briefing today, the governor clearly stated his intention to still present the 2025 Rivers State Appropriation Bill to the Assembly.

Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
